What Are Group Piano Lessons? Solo Practice in a Group Setting

Group piano lessons are taught in a group setting (of up to six students) similar to that of a classroom. However, unlike a classroom, students work on their own materials and at their own pace with teacher supervision. This allows students to develop their talents at their own pace while taking advantage of additional resources like demonstrations or peer support.

In my group sessions, your student has his or her own keyboard, set of headphones, and either sheet music or books.  Although they’re able to connect with their peers and observe demonstrations, they’re under no pressure to perform in front of others. This helps create a fun, low-stress environment that accelerates learning.

Which Students Do Best With Group Piano Lessons?

If you’re weighing the pros and cons of group versus private piano lessons, be sure to take your child’s personality and learning style into consideration. Small group piano lessons are great for kids who:

  • Learn best in a classroom setting. Taking lessons at home can introduce distractions, but a classroom setting helps kids stay focused.

  • Value connection with their peers. Research from Princeton shows that many children are active social learners, meaning they learn best when they’re able to draw on their peers.

  • Prefer greater independence. Unlike private lessons, the teacher won’t always look over your child’s shoulder. This makes group lessons ideal for students who want more independence.

  • Are just getting started. Group lessons are great for younger students just beginning to play the piano, and who will benefit from a fun, exciting environment.

The Benefits of Learning in a Group

Taking lessons in a group setting delivers many benefits that enhance the quality of your student’s experience when beginning on the piano. But group lessons positively impact more than just your budding pianist. Among the benefits include:

Friendship Opportunities

Your child or children will be surrounded by like-minded peers with whom they’ll have the chance to cultivate friendships. They’ll have an additional support network to encourage them along the way as they learn to play the piano.

Accelerated Learning

Group instruction introduces greater possibilities for teaching, including demonstrations, group discussions, or team activities. Your child will benefit from this enriched environment, grasping concepts faster to accelerate their learning.

Cost Savings

If you have multiple children interested in learning to play the piano, group lessons can represent an affordable, convenient option. I’m able to offer group lessons for as little as $60 per month, a sizable discount from my private lessons.

Increased Instructional Time

I teach group piano lessons in 60-minute classes, rather than the standard 30-minute lessons you might receive in private instruction. This doubles the amount of time your student has to practice and learn new concepts.

Fun, Tailored Lessons

Your student will still receive tailored lessons for his or her individual needs. Additionally, I can craft lessons that help get children excited about learning to play the piano, instilling in them a lifelong passion for the talent.

I not only know how to connect with your students, but I’m familiar with what it’s like to start learning to play the piano at a young age.
